Happy Birthday to Mother Teresa !

Mother Teresa’s actual name was “Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu”. She was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, now the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. She was an Aromanian Roman Catholic nun with Indian citizenship, who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Calcutta), India in 1950. For over forty five years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries.

Judging the impact that Mother Teresa had on society is difficult at best. It would be true to say that her dedication to helping those who couldn't help themselves has been an inspiration to the world. But that doesn't quite communicate the full scope of what her life meant to the world. An inspiration is something that comes and goes. It is good for a moment, it causes to feel something, and then it is gone.

Mother Teresa's life was so much more than that. Mother Teresa was an agent of change. She did more than inspire us, she changed the way that we thought about the world around us. Mother Teresa took what God had given her and used it for His glory. What she taught us was that every person, regardless of wealth, health, social standing, religion, sex, or creed, has value in the eyes of God. She taught us that Love will open doors that hate has closed. She taught us that the greatest way to show God's love is to meet the needs of others.

Though she is no longer on this earth, the ministry that Mother Teresa began is thriving throughout the world. She has restored dignity to the shunned, love to the outcast, and life to the dying. Through her home for the dying in Calcutta, those who would have been left to die in the gutters were given clean beds, warm meals, and someone to love them during their final days on earth. Since it's creation, more than 40,000 men, women, and children were taken from the streets of Calcutta and transported to the home. Of those, one half died surrounded by love and kindness. For those who survived, the sisters tried to find a job or they were sent to homes where they could live happily for years to come.

Her Shishu Bavan, or home for babies, as well as other orphanages have offered shelter and hope to countless children around the world. Many of the children that were raised in them went on to become productive citizens and members of her order.

The leper colony Mother Teresa founded with the winnings from her 1971 Pope Paul XXIII Peace Prize has offered a place for the outcasts to find acceptance. When she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, she convinced the committee to cancel the official banquet and used that money to buy meals for 15,000 poor. Hundreds of thousands of meals have been served in her soup kitchens world wide.

Today, her sisters are active all over India and outside in many countries in the world: From Venezuela to Jordany, from Italy to Tanzania, from the United States to Russia. She also opened houses for alcoholics, drug addicts, and homeless and destitutes in Rome as well as homes for aids patients all over the world. The Pope was also asked to open a house for mothers with unwanted pregnancies. Mother Teresa also supported the rehabilitation of prisoners in India.

Her work has opened the hearts of an unknown number of people to the message of Jesus Christ. Her greatest impact on society was to bring an awareness that love is worth nothing unless it is given for free.

What is Global Warming ???

Have You wondered why the Rains did not fall until august, instead of june 2008 ?
Did u think that the number of floods, hurricanes and storms increased in the recent past ?
Do u feel that the average temperature of Earth is increasing gradually ??

YES, YOU ARE AT THE RIGHT PLACE !! ITS TRUE !!!

Its happening . . .

Introducing the slow poison - Global Warming :

Some gases like Carbondioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and water vapour are known as "Green House gases". When the sun rays fall on the Earth's surface, some of the rays are absorbed and most of them are reflected back into space. The Green house gases in atmosphere stop the reflecting sun rays from bouncing back and trap them within the atmosphere. This results in increase of the Earth's atmospheric temparature. It is useful when naturally occurring green house gases maintain required temeperature, else earth would freeze and wouldn't support life. But, on contrary, when the green house gases become more and more in the atmosphere, particularly due to human interference, the temperature goes on increasing. This is called "Global warming".

The increase of Earth's temperature due to increase in the amount of green house gases is known as "Global warming".

The global warming has happened in the past few years and is evident from the rise in mean temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. The main causes for the global warming are attributed to release of green house gases by human activities. The largest producers of these gases are the thermal power plants, which burn the fossil fuels and produce these gases in large quantities. The second biggest sources of these green house gases are the road vehicles and industries.

Effects of Global Warming:

There are frequent melt down of glaciers that result in floods and other natural calamities. The melting of ice at the poles had already led the increase in mean sea level. And further increase in temperature may further melt the ice, which will engulf low lying countries.

The effect of global warming can be felt on seasons too. There is shift in season cycle, as the summers are getting longer than the winters. That’s why delay in Rains !

The global warming is also responsible for the introduction of some new diseases. The bacteria are more effective and multiply much faster in warmer temperatures compared to cold temperatures.

The effect of global warming is very evident on the animal kingdom also. Some animals have become extinct due to loss of their natural habitat or their inability to evolve to the rapid changes in the climate.

Global warming is also effecting the crop production, as the crops are getting destroyed by the sudden change in temperatures or sudden on set of rains

As a matter of fact, because of global warming, the earth’s atmosphere is getting more unpredictable with heavy rains in the areas, which have scanty rainfall or drought in the areas, which received good annual rainfall. The months of rainfall has also getting affected

The number of disasters like floods, famines, cyclones etc are increasing gradually and are on a high now. This is all as a result of Global warming. See the statistics of the disasters and find out how the numbers of disasters increased to a maximum !

How to stop Global Warming !!

What can WE do to stop
GLOBAL WARMING ??

Global Warming is a dramatically urgent and serious problem. We don't need to wait for governments to find a solution for this problem. Each individual can bring an important help adopting a more responsible lifestyle. starting from little, everyday things. It's the only reasonable way to save our planet, before it is too late.

1. Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl)
CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save lot of carbon dioxide a year.

2. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner
Cleaning a dirty air filter can save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

3. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases
Look for the Energy Star label on new appliances to choose the most energy efficient products available.

4. Do not leave appliances on standby
Use the "on/off" function on the machine itself. A TV set that's switched on for 3 hours a day (the average time Europeans spend watching TV) and in standby mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in standby mode.

5. Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket
You’ll save 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple action. You can save another 550 pounds per year by setting the thermostat no higher than 50°C.

6. Move your fridge and freezer
Placing them next to the cooker or boiler consumes much more energy than if they were standing on their own. For example, if you put them in a hot cellar room where the room temperature is 30-35ºC, energy use is almost double and causes an extra 160kg of CO2 emissions for fridges per year and 320kg for freezers.

7. Defrost old fridges and freezers regularly
Even better is to replace them with newer models, which all have automatic defrost cycles and are generally up to two times more energy-efficient than their predecessors.

8. Don't let heat escape from your house over a long period
When airing your house, open the windows for only a few minutes. If you leave a small opening all day long, the energy needed to keep it warm inside during six cold months (10ºC or less outside temperature) would result in almost 1 ton of CO2 emissions.

9. Replace your old single-glazed windows with double-glazing
This requires a bit of upfront investment, but will halve the energy lost through windows and pay off in the long term. If you go for the best the market has to offer (wooden-framed double-glazed units with low-emission glass and filled with argon gas), you can even save more than 70% of the energy lost.

10. Cover your pots while cooking
Doing so can save a lot of the energy needed for preparing the dish. Even better are pressure cookers and steamers: they can save around 70%!

11. Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when they are full
If you need to use it when it is half full, then use the half-load or economy setting. There is also no need to set the temperatures high. Nowadays detergents are so efficient that they get your clothes and dishes clean at low temperatures.

12. Take a shower instead of a bath
A shower takes up to four times less energy than a bath. To maximise the energy saving, avoid power showers and use low-flow showerheads, which are cheap and provide the same comfort.

13. Use less hot water
It takes a lot of energy to heat water. You can use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of carbon dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year) instead of hot.

14. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible
You can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year.

15. Insulate and weatherize your home
Properly insulating your walls and ceilings can save 25% of your home heating bill and 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Caulking and weather-stripping can save another 1,700 pounds per year. Energy Efficient has more information on how to better insulate your home.

16. Be sure you’re recycling at home
You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year by recycling half of the waste your household generates.

17. Recycle your organic waste
Around 3% of the greenhouse gas emissions through the methane is released by decomposing bio-degradable waste. By recycling organic waste or composting it if you have a garden, you can help eliminate this problem! Just make sure that you compost it properly, so it decomposes with sufficient oxygen, otherwise your compost will cause methane emissions and smell foul.

18. Buy intelligently
One bottle of 1.5l requires less energy and produces less waste than three bottles of 0.5l. As well, buy recycled paper products: it takes less 70 to 90% less energy to make recycled paper and it prevents the loss of forests worldwide.

19. Choose products that come with little packaging and buy refills when you can
You will also cut down on waste production and energy use... another help against global warming.

20. Reuse your shopping bag
When shopping, it saves energy and waste to use a reusable bag instead of accepting a disposable one in each shop. Waste not only discharges CO2 and methane into the atmosphere, it can also pollute the air, groundwater and soil.

21. Reduce waste
Most products we buy cause greenhouse gas emissions in one or another way, e.g. during production and distribution. By taking your lunch in a reusable lunch box instead of a disposable one, you save the energy needed to produce new lunch boxes.

22. Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%.

23. Switch to green power
In many areas, you can switch to energy generated by clean, renewable sources such as wind and solar.

24. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen
Frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce.

25. Seek out and support local farmers markets
They reduce the amount of energy required to grow and transport the food to you by one fifth. Seek farmer’s markets in your area, and go for them.

26. Buy organic foods as much as possible
Organic soils capture and store carbon dioxide at much higher levels than soils from conventional farms. If we grew all of our corn and soybeans organically, we’d remove 580 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere!

27. Eat less meat
Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas and cows are one of the greatest methane emitters. Their grassy diet and multiple stomachs cause them to produce methane, which they exhale with every breath.

28. Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible
Avoiding just 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year! Look for transit options in your area.

29. Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmates
Sharing a ride with someone just 2 days a week will reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 1,590 pounds a year.

30. Don't leave an empty roof rack on your car
This can increase fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 10% due to wind resistance and the extra weight - removing it is a better idea.

31. Keep your car tuned up
Regular maintenance helps improve fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. When just 1% of car owners properly maintain their cars, nearly a billion pounds of carbon dioxide are kept out of the atmosphere.

32. Drive carefully and do not waste fuel
You can reduce CO2 emissions by readjusting your driving style. Choose proper gears, do not abuse the gas pedal, use the engine brake instead of the pedal brake when possible and turn off your engine when your vehicle is motionless for more than one minute. By readjusting your driving style you can save money on both fuel and car mantainance.

33. Check your tires weekly to make sure they’re properly inflated
Proper tire inflation can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Since every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, every increase in fuel efficiency makes a difference!

34. When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicle
You can save 3,000 pounds of carbon dioxide every year if your new car gets only 3 miles per gallon more than your current one. You can get up to 60 miles per gallon with a hybrid!

35. Try car sharing
Need a car but don’t want to buy one? Community car sharing organizations provide access to a car and your membership fee covers gas, maintenance and insurance. Many companies offer low emission or hybrid cars too!

36. Fly less
Air travel produces large amounts of emissions so reducing how much you fly by even one or two trips a year can reduce your emissions significantly.

37. Encourage your school or business to reduce emissions
You can extend your positive influence on global warming well beyond your home by actively encouraging other to take action.

38. Encourage the switch to renewable energy
Successfully combating global warming requires a national transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass. These technologies are ready to be deployed more widely

39. Protect and conserve forest worldwide
Forests play a critial role in global warming: they store carbon. When forests are burned or cut down, their stored carbon is release into the atmosphere - deforestation now accounts for about 20% of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Thoughts to ponder on Independence day !

Kind Remembrances and Best Wishes for the Independence Day !

India Today !
Today India has completed 61 years of Independence successfully. It has survived its democracy for so many years, inspite of many communal tensions, political coups, terror strikes and two major wars. It is a matter of pride and honour for all of us. We are still able to live together with the same "Unity in Diversity". We are proud of India and feel fortunate to be born as Indians ...

PROBLEMS :
... that is the positive side, but on negative note India is still facing problems like Poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, corruption, social inequalities, communal tensions, terrorism and many more. All the people are fed up with the corrupt officials and immoral politicians. Everyone feels that the system should change. Some believe that india needs revolution. Some are planning to change this situation by forming new political parties and so on . . .

METHODS :
Politics is a powerful tool, but gaining power in elections and able to implement reforms practically are very complicated things. It looks easy to wipe the problems from the top level, but the fact is that they keep re-appearing as long as the roots are intact. We need to pull out the roots of these inconsistencies. We have to work from the ground level.

What can we do ?
We can take some time for the society and participate in some welfare activities. let us try to provide basic facilities like food, clothing, shelter, education, health, security etc to all the people. Let us bring awareness among the children and youth about the present problems and the way in which they can be solved. Once we bring in the realisation of all these issues among public, the thinking or perspective of people will change. They will vote only for genuine candidates. They will oppose any kind of injustice. They will press the government to take up public welfare measures. That will be the re-birth of our Indian democracy . . .

It takes a lot of time and efforts, but we will reach the destination for sure ! So, all the concerned citizens and responsible Indians, plz try to spare some of your free time. Discuss on what to do rather than simply highlighting or criticizing the problems. Unite for a cause and work for the upliftment of poor & needy people.

TIME TO ACT :
You may collect small contributions from friends, family, relatives, colleagues, neighbours and use it for educating poor or orphans, for providing health facilities to poor people or old sick people. You may atleast donate your old unused clothes, bed sheets, blankets. You can donate a small amount of pocket money. Even Rs.10 from 100 people will become a considerable amount. Never underestimate your position and never think that what can I do ? There are many ways in which you can help the people and uplift the society, if you really have the concern & care. On this independence day, let us awake the TRUE INDIAN in ourselves and let us begin ....

If you belong to Hyderabad and want to participate in our welfare activities or if you stay elsewhere but wish to support our cause and work, plz feel free to mail to : mailarrow@rediffmail.com or call +91-97041 84306.
